Friends,   This Obama health plan will be hailed as one of the greatest political feats in American history.  It must be nurtured. Please send this letter to your local newspaper and to all your friends.  Tell your Member of Congress we need health care reform because the insurance companies are draining the life out of America.    It will not be easy.  Take a look at history.

The giants in America took on the big tasks and made America better.

Thomas Jefferson took advantage of Napoleon Bonaparte’s financial problems to buy the Louisiana Territory for a pittance. It was not easy.

It took DeWitt Clinton and friends many years to persuade the US government to build the Erie Canal.  It was not easy.

Theodore Judah, with help from Abraham Lincoln, helped create the Transcontinental Railroad.  Definitely not an easy task.

Justin Morrill was a school dropout, yet he was the driving force behind the legislation that created the Land Grant Colleges.  Not an easy task.

The Homestead Act was loaded with corruption, but it gave new life to immigrants and to poor people, thanks to Andrew Jackson.  It’s never easy.

Building the Panama Canal took a strong person like Teddy Roosevelt to overcome all those problems including a little revolution in Panama.  Not so easy.

FDR wanted rural America to have the convenience of electric power like the major cities enjoyed.  It was not easy convincing power companies to light up the farms.

Cold War GI Bill was created and it helped me complete my PhD at the University of Michigan.  It helped millions of vets to achieve a college degree.

The Interstate Highway System is the heart of America’s infrastructure and the source of great changes in our history.  Thanks to Dwight Eisenhower.

Now, the Obama Health Reform Plan will fit into the most important events in US history.  It will not be easy.  It must be done.

This is not a Republican task.  It’s not a Democratic task.  It is an American task.

It must be done right away because all people need good health care right now.

The Perfect Summer Herb: Mint

Spring Roll (Salad) with Tofu
(adapted from Eat. Drink. Better.)

A great way to enjoy this herb fresh, without any cooking, is in spring rolls. Toss together the following ingredients and put in a rice paper roll–or skip the rice paper roll and eat a healthy salad version. You can vary the portions depending on your tastes.

Green cabbage
Romaine lettuce
Fresh mint leaves
Fresh basil leaves
Carrot
Green onion
Peanuts
Sesame seeds
Mung bean sprouts
Vermicelli noodles (cooked according to package)
Extra firm tofu (sautéed in soy sauce, ginger, a tsp. of canola oil, and a drop of sesame oil)

Serve with your favorite Asian dressing or a homemade peanut dressing.

Roasted Eggplant with Mint
Eggplant, smaller varieties sliced in half, larger sliced into 1/2″ thick slices
Fresh Mint
Olive Oil
Sea Salt
Fresh Cracked Black Pepper

1. Pre-heat oven to 350º F. Lay the eggplant on a sheet pan with the mint, toss with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. If you are using small halved eggplants, lay them so that they are skin side down.
2. Roast until eggplants are a light golden brown and soft (can be anywhere from 30 min – 1 hr depending on your eggplants and their thickness.) You do not need to flip them during roasting.
3. Double check finished eggplants for seasoning and serve with the crispy mint leaves.

I cut up the roasted mint and eggplant and used it in a salad with some fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and a little more fresh mint. This recipe is also really good plain!

Raspberry Mint Punch
(adapted from PlanTea)
3 sprigs of fresh mint leaves
1 cup fresh or frozen raspberries
1 cup water
1 1/2 quarts lemonade
Fresh mint for garnish

Bring water to a boil, add mint leaves and steep for five minutes. Strain and cool. Stir in berries and add mixture to the lemonade. Chill for at least two hours to allow flavors to blend. Serve in tall glasses with ice, garnished with a mint leaf. Serves 6-7.

MJ’s 3 biggest albums, “Thriller,” “Bad” & “Dangerous” each produced 7 top 40 hits. MJ was the 7th of 9 children. MJ was born in 1958: 19 + 58 = 77. MJ died on the 25th: 2+5=7. Michael = 7. The photo above is of my friend and colleague Sally Cheyne McDonald posing with two of her grandchildren. I’m asking that you place Sally on your prayer and meditation list as she is facing a major health challenge.

As I write this, Sally is one hour into surgery in Denver, Colorado (operation commenced at 5:00 pm local Denver time). After a couple of medical tests performed last week, doctors discovered that Sally had a spot of cancer in her stomach and a tumor the size of a fist in between her colon and right ovary. The tumor is malignant and doctors suspect lymph node involvement. She will be in the hospital for about a week, in bed recovering for a month, then will undergo a six month term of intensive chemotherapy.

Sally is the woman who, after my cat Draggie passed away in February of 2004, did an astrology reading for a client as payment for a painting of Draggie to be done by her artist-client. That painting hangs in my living room and a copy of it is on my website: Here.

Sally also helped me through a very difficult time later in 2004 when my computer malfunctioned and I had no way to make income. Through her efforts, many donations were made to me so that I could continue my work as a writer and counseling astrologer.

The aforementioned stories are not about “me,” although it may appear that way. The stories testify to the kind of woman my friend Sally is. Her capacity to empathize with another’s pain and offer gifts of healing are genuine and rare. For my part, I asked Sally what I could do for her now that the tables had turned. It’s not an issue of “tit for tat.” It’s about love; about the completion of the circle.

I hope that you will join me as well, in your own time zone, this coming Saturday (June 20-21) for a Summer Solstice candle lighting in Sally’s honor. The Summer Solstice is at 10:46 pm Pacific Time on June 20 and at 1:46 am, ET. You don’t have to feel stressed about lighting a candle at the exact moment the Sun reaches 0 degrees Cancer, because that may not be possible given the lateness of the hour on the East Coast. The universe understands our intentions and God/dess knows what lies in our hearts. The healing power of the solstice moment will surely reach Sally! This was one of her requests — that we engage in prayer and candle lighting for her healing. I hope you will join with me and tell me about your experiences.

I will be walking along the beach this Saturday with a dear friend of mine, Marjan (if she is able to go with me this weekend), and we’ll take a moment to drop a magic charm in sea for Sally!
